Fix Your Credit The Right Way
Are credit repair companies legit and do they really help?

I am trying to raise my credit score quickly. Right now I am at 593-around 650 depending on agency. So, by paying off the 5 credit cards that I currently have(some with amounts ranging from 1,500-2,500), should that raise my credit score a great deal? If not, will a credit repair company help or are they just a scam?

ok, to raise your credit score, will not happen overnight, but here are somethings to do

why would you want a credit repair company, they say they are there only to repair credit but you don’t say anything about anything that needs repaired so you wouldn’t need to look for one. And, btw the are scammers since if you found your credit report did need repair you could repair it all by yourself.

Getting your balances down to less than half does help the score.

most are legitimate but they charge a fortune and they dont do anything that you cant do yourself for free and a little time. All they do is write letters or make phone calls to either try to lower your interest lower your payments or settle the accounts for less than is owed which also affects your score negitively

Even if they are legit, they will cost you money.
Just pay off the money on your own.

Most credit repair companies are legitimate, however, there are scams out there, especially now when consumers may be more vulnerable due to the economy. There are a couple of things to consider:

    1. You CAN do this yourself. It requires patience, determination, and persistence. Do your homework and research the Fair Credit Reporting Act and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to know your rights.

    2. Never pay for services before you receive them. It is illegal to charge up front for credit repair, other than a nominal sign up fee (cost of doing business, etc)

    3. About 30% of your credit score is determined by your balance to limit ratio on your credit cards. You are correct to pay them down as much as possible (carrying a balance of more than 30% of your limits can damage your score). Do not close the accounts once you pay them down.

    4. There are NO quick fixes. You have the right to dispute any inaccurate items on your credit report, however, beware of companies telling you that they can remove accurate information. This is a red flag and illegal.

Credit repair companies can help you save time and money if you choose not to do this on your own. They will keep you on a scheduled calendar and all correspondence will be sent out in a timely fashion instead of sitting on your to do list for months at a time.

Compare it to changing the oil in your car. Most people could do this themselves in about an hour for less than $10, however many choose to hire professionals so they know the job will be done right the first time and they don’t get all dirty and waste a Saturday morning changing their oil. This is America, and we’re all about convenience.

I run a credit and debt management firm out of San Diego called The Credit Insiders (http://www.thecreditinsiders.com). If you have any questions or would like someone to look over your credit report, we offer free consultations 866-229-6233.

Best of luck improving your score, and remember there are no quick fixes. Pay your bills on time every time, use your credit cards responsibly, and review your credit report often to make sure everything on it is reporting 100% accurately.
